Letter from the Editor

Dear Reader,

Whether you've been dreading it or counting the milliseconds until its arrival, another school year is upon us! To our returning students, welcome back to another year of inspiration and learning. To our new students, a very warm welcome: you are joining a community unlike any other, and I hope that you will love our school as much as we all do!

This year, I urge you all to see our online space not as a limitation on socialization or an invitation to isolate, but as an opportunity to forge some truly meaningful, long-lasting bonds with your peers and instructors. Join clubs, go to office hours, attend meetups. Get involved. Ask questions. Take initiative. All of your efforts will play a role in making our school a better place for you and your peers, and for every future Pixel.

Perhaps your mind is already bubbling with ideas or doubts. I encourage you to make use of one of the Pixel Journal's new features: Letter to the Community. As part of our efforts to ensure that the Journal represents our community, we have created a space for you—students, faculty, and parents—to share your thoughts and concerns pertaining to OHS and to respond to articles published in the Journal. Whether anonymous or not, flattering or scathing, brief or lengthy, we will take every submission seriously and ensure that your voice is heard in subsequent issues of the Journal. We look forward to seeing what you have to say!

And we hope that you look forward to reading what we have to say. Our team worked hard over the summer to put together a year of exciting articles, covering topics from OHS study habits and student travel to a continuation of our interviews with college admissions officers—in short, readers (and prospective contributors) have a lot to look forward to.

For now, enjoy the school year’s first Journal issue! This issue is a shorter one, featuring interviews with students Maddy Manning-Bi ‘22 and Chloe Tsang ‘21 alongside our first Culture article, which addresses concerns that students have voiced about moderation of the Skype Bulletin. The Bulletin is particularly active during the first few weeks of school, when students have many questions about classes, clubs, student government campaigns, and Start Up meetups. I hope this article will clarify the viewpoints of both the Bulletin admin and the student body so that we can make the platform an even more positive, effective part of our community. Happy first full week of classes!

Cheers,

Hannah
