Lunar New Year: Traditions, Food, and Connection

A few days ago, I watched in surprise as my family friend lifted two whole chickens into our shopping cart.

“It's New Year's,” he shrugged. Each year, there is a day when families around the world gather to watch the old year wane and the new year begin over good food and cheer. Lunar New Year is celebrated across the world in many Asian cultures as it marks the beginning of the new year on the Lunar calendar and the coming of spring. Each culture has its distinct traditions, with shared themes of renewal and good luck and an opportunity to celebrate the passing of time around family and friends.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a global celebration of love and romance. Lovers often spend the holiday on romantic dates or surprising each other with gifts. Traditional gifts include heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, flowers, and balloons. Others also make personalized cards for an extra thoughtful touch.

Pixel Fest Recap 2026

The Tradition of Thanksgiving

Just as October is prized for Halloween and December for its winter holidays, November is prized for Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving, students are thankful for three days off and no homework. Thanksgiving Day, always on the fourth Thursday of November, is a day of family reunions, friends gathering, thankfulness, cooking, and, of course, food.

Homecoming Recap

From the 2nd to the 4th of October, OHS students traveled from all over the world to the capital of the United States, Washington, D.C., for homecoming. Homecoming is traditionally an American football game at which alumni, students, and parents show their school spirit, and even though we do not have an official OHS football team, we can celebrate our school in our own way. From Thursday morning to Saturday night, this year’s homecoming was filled with events: ice skating, pastry walks, night tours, bowling, and even a Pixel detective to win a prize, students rating an average of 4.5/5 stars overall, but let’s recap from the start.

StartUp! 2025 Across the Globe

As the 2025-26 school year kicked off, families across the world joined to meet each other at their regional StartUp! event. With events spanning from Northern California/Nevada and Hawaii to Beijing and Europe/Africa, StartUp! was an opportunity for Stanford OHS families to come together and connect at the beginning of the academic year. Some regions organised in-person events, while others chose to host online events for new and returning families to connect with each other.

OHS Homecoming: A Beloved Tradition

The annual OHS Homecoming took place on November 22-23 in the Boston area, drawing over 200 students and families to the Royal Sonesta Boston, a luxurious riverfront hotel. This annual event has grown from an informal gathering of a few families in Boston and MIT Splash into one of the most cherished and important OHS traditions.

Pronto++: Powering Up Pronto

Last year, OHS implemented its new messaging platform: Pronto. Since OHS has moved onto Pronto, OHS students have already begun innovatively improving the app. Recently, juniors Michael Sha (‘26), Josh Tittiranonda (‘26), and Gene Yang (‘26) released a Chrome extension known as Pronto++. Pronto++ intends to refine students’ quality-of-life, with features such as markdown and mathematical notation.

Alumni Spotlight: Ione McKerley-Geier, A Tuf(t) Transition but Easily One of the Best

Aside from the excellent educational experience she had at SOHS, Ione holds one memory, especially in high regard: “When my friends and I did graffiti on a legal wall in Boston at homecoming as seniors. We made a lot of different art (including various Peanuts characters). But I think the best part was when we spray painted Aristotle, John Stuart Mill, and Kant (the CRA--an OHS Core class, Critical Reading and Argumentation---triumvirate). It was super fun and very OHS.” A creative and unique experience with friends is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Student Spotlight: Lexi MacRury

Beyond her leadership roles, Lexi has been an active participant in clubs such as Model UN, Debate Club, and the Drama and Performance Arts Circle. Her diverse interests include Theatre, Psychology, and Data Science, showing a passion for exploration. Sharing her club experiences, Lexi says "My experiences with each club would be the same: great! I am happy to have received the opportunities and support to further my interest in each club!”
