Introduction to 2021-2022 Editorial Board

In addition to a new school year, say hello to our new editorial board!

Maddy Manning-Bi (2022), Assistant Editor

Dear Reader,

My name is Maddy Manning-Bi and I will be the Assistant Editor for the Pixel Journal this year! I’m a senior going into my fourth year at OHS and I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I’m a classical singer, pianist, and cellist and hope to pursue a double degree in Voice and Opera Performance and Creative Writing. I’m currently a Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the Communications team at Dear Asian Youth, handling all personal essays and opinion articles for their Literature Team. At OHS, I lead the Culture, History, & Civics Club (CHC), the OHS Salon, and I co-lead the Asian Pacific American Student Union (APASU). Academically, I’m a peer tutor, teaching assistant, and student ambassador! I also enjoy English, language, history, and math courses. In my free time, I’m either reading, playing around on the piano, or hanging out with my cat Buddy!

As the Assistant Editor for the Pixel Journal, I work with our Editor-in-Chief––Rachel Hu––to oversee the Pixel Journal and its pieces. I send out announcements to our Editorial staff, help set up meetings, collect pieces for issues, brainstorm concepts for our issues, write my own articles, and generally assist anyone on the Editorial staff with anything they need. Additionally, contributors or any student interested in the PJ can always reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or ideas they have!

For this issue, Rachel and I have decided to present a series of letters from your Editorial staff, welcoming you to the 2021-2022 Pixel Journal. In this edition, besides our letters, you’ll also find a Back to School Survival Guide written by our Student Body President and Vice President: Lexi Tabacu and Jeevet Kaur. We hope you enjoy the August publication for the Pixel Journal!

Zoë Huml (2022), Stories Editor

Dear Reader,

My name is Zoë Huml and I am very excited to be the Stories Editor for the Pixel Journal this year. I have been taking classes at Stanford OHS since I was in eighth grade, and just started my senior year of high school (time flies!). My academic passions lie in the fields of neuroscience and psychology, as I am fascinated by the mind and the brain. When not working as the Pixel Journal Stories Editor or studying, you can usually find me on the slopes training and competing nationally and internationally as a competitive ski racer. Committed to pursuing both academics and athletics to a high level, I know how demanding yet rewarding managing both can be; for this reason, a fellow athlete and I began the Student-Athlete Bookclub Circle at SOHS with the goal of creating a welcome space for all athletes to grow together and support one another. Furthermore, growing up with strong female influences in both my family and my athletic community, from a young age I have been passionate about female empowerment; in the last few years I’ve had the opportunity to lead Girl Powder, a mentorship program for young female alpine ski racers that my sister founded, as well as co-host a female empowerment podcast, And She Did. In my free time, I also like to bike with my family and have just begun baking (cookies and banana bread are still the only things that I’ve mastered, but I’m working on it!).

As noted, my position at the Pixel Journal is as the stories editor. As the stories editor, I have the opportunity to focus on the incredible individuals in our SOHS community. I review any student or staff interview-related pieces, as well as will conduct my own student and instructor spotlights. I believe that our diverse student body and instructors form the heart of our school, and this community has made my time at SOHS so special. I am very honored and excited to work as the Stories Editor this year and help highlight our extraordinary students and staff!

- Zoë

Eryn Su (2023), Culture Editor

Dear Reader,

Hi, I’m Eryn and I’m so excited to be a part of the Pixel Journal team this year as Culture Editor!

A little bit about me: I’m a full-time junior going into my third year at OHS, and I’m an international student based in Bangkok, Thailand, and Minakami, Japan. At OHS, I’m an AP Biology peer tutor and the leader of the Youth for Animals Club. Outside of school, some of my hobbies include digital art, photography, and blogging!

As Culture Editor, I oversee, you guessed it, the Culture column of the Pixel Journal. Stretching across the globe, OHS is so unique for its both diverse and unified community, and this is what the Culture column attempts to capture. From discussing trends in pop culture to school culture to illuminating common student experiences, you’ll find it all in the articles featured here. I write my own articles, edit those submitted by our contributors, and work with the rest of the editorial staff to ensure the Pixel Journal is the best it can be!

I’m looking forward to the year ahead and perhaps working with you to publish your articles in the future! In the meantime, I hope you enjoy meeting the other editors of the Pixel Journal and gaining some back-to-school insights in this issue.

Wishing you a great 2021-2022 school year,

Eryn

Sophia Risin (2023), Clubs Editor

Dear Readers,

Hi! My name is Sophia Risin and I am the Clubs Editor for the Pixel Journal! I’m from Rumson, NJ but end up spending most of the year down in Palm Beach, FL. I’m involved in a lot of different things, but primarily interested in astrophysics and philosophy. At OHS, I co-lead theoretical physics, debate, and french club. I also peer tutor MSB, HSC, and APUSH! Outside of OHS, I’m the Vice President for the Fairborn Institute Robotic Observatory and work on projects related to red dwarf binary systems and photocenter astrometry. I am also involved with Innoverge as the Public Relations head, STEAMpark as the logistics director for the teen board, and tutor local students. When I’m not working, I love playing video games with friends or exploring new places.

As the Clubs Editor, I work on stories featuring all of the clubs here at OHS. We work on everything from features with updates on club activities, to deep dives on some of the projects being worked on at some of OHS’ 100+ student run organizations. If you have any clubs or circles that you are interested in hearing more about, feel free to reach out!

April Wen (2023), Community Engagement Editor

Dear Reader,

I’m a sophomore and this is my third year at OHS. I live in SoCal, right near the beach! Academically, I love chemistry, biology, mathematics, and Latin. At OHS I’m a peer tutor for multiple courses as well as a student ambassador. I also lead multiple clubs, such as the UNICEF club, UNHCR club, and Gen SHE Club. I’m also the mathematics lead instructor for The4Network, overseeing the math department. When I’m not studying you can find me either swimming, baking, or reading. I also love playing the viola both competitively and just as a relaxing activity.

I look forward to reading all the articles you will submit and I hope you have a successful school year!

Sincerely,
