Society Spotlight: Climate Action Project

Here at SOHS, students are taking climate action into their own hands through a growing society: the Climate Action Project. Students who are passionate about nature and climate advocacy have joined the society, which aims to raise awareness through connecting students across the globe.

The Climate Action Project recently merged with an environmental branch, and the weekly meetings alternate between the two. During these gatherings, members discuss recent news articles, dive into “topic lectures” on topics spanning legal, scientific, and economic fields, and open the floor for lively discussions. The meetings often conclude with fun activities like Gartic Phone.

Beyond meetings, the society is always looking for ways to help the environment through in-person cleanups. Recent activities include a park cleanup at Bayland Nature Preserve during Pixel Fest, and a hike at Lake Lagunita. This summer, the group kicked off their efforst with a booth at Cupertino’s climate journalism platform event.

Looking ahead, the Climate Action project has exciting plans. They are organizing another beach cleanup at Pixel Fest and hope to visit the Stanford O’Donhue Farm to learn about sustainable agriculture. The society is also planning to have guest speaker events with professionals and OHS instructors.

“Students should be interested because we don’t only talk about the issues [of climate change] but offer many opportunities for students to get involved. The Climate Action Project helps make OHS a more sustainable place by raising awareness,” Shen says.
